Hurricane Mountain - New York

We met our friends at their hotel in Lake Placid then traveled to the east side trailhead.  There are three different trials you can take up Hurricane Mountain.  This was Joshua and Daddy's third time up the mountain on this trail but for the rest of us it was only our second time to hike up on this side.

Starting out it is pretty easy...

In the clearing where the watchtower cabin and lean-to was located

Here is a old photo of the fire watchers cabin before it was taken down.

The trail gets a little more intense as you get up higher!

Leaving encouragement and water for the ones bringing up the end of our troop.

Finally at the top!!

The fire tower...

To keep crazy people from climbing the tower the first two flights of stairs have been removed...but do you think that stopped Dad, Joshua, and Hope?... nope!

Joshua, Andrew, and David

Lillia, Joy, and Faith enjoy the view

We listened to part of the Message entitled "The Guide" where Brother Branham tells about his experience on Hurricane Mountain.

The whole group!

On the way down Joy stopped for a rest :)

Another rest stop....

The leaves were so pretty... there's David running way up ahead!

We went to Stewart's Shop for Ice Cream before we headed home and our friends continued on their way to Connecticut.  We had such a wonderful time hiking together!  It was a wonderful way to end our vacation to New England!

Driving through Vermont & Ferry to New York

I had a few pictures I thought I would post from when we drove through Vermont on Saturday after Mount Washington.

It is so pretty there in the fall with the leaves changing color.

We took a ferry across Lake Champlain from Vermont to New York.

Next and final post about our New England vacation will be Hurricane Mountain!

:: Mt. Washington ::

We camped in New Hampshire and on Saturday we drove the auto road up Mount Washington, the tallest mountain on the east coast.  It was very cold and windy at the top, a chilly temperature of 26*F!!!

On the clearest days, observers can see as far as Mount Marcy in New York State, 134 miles to the west.

Stage Office on the summit

Notice how the building is chained to the ground?

It's chained to keep it from blowing off the mountain top!

David checks out some rime ice on a pole

The Tip Top House is the oldest surviving building on the summit of Mount Washington.

There is a post office in the Mount Washington Visitors Center at the summit!

Inside the Extreme Mount Washington Museum you could "drive" a snowcat down the auto road during winter.  It is the only way to get up or down the mountain when snow is covering the road.

We watched the Cog Railway make its first trip of the day up the mountain.

As we watched I noticed this man in the front of the car scraping the track off.

Rime ice covers everything at the top of the mountain.  Rime Ice is caused by low-hanging clouds which cause freezing fog.  The fog freezes to the wind facing side of tree branches, buildings, or any other solid objects.

Headed down the winding 8 mile road...

In 2004 Jonathon Wyatt set the record for running the auto road, he did it in 56 minutes!
Thomas Danielson set the 49 minute record for climbing the road on his bicycle.
And since it is an "auto road" the fastest automobile time is 6 minutes 11.41 seconds set in 2011!

Saturday we spent the night in Lake Placid, New York and Sunday morning we met up with a family from Indiana and climbed Hurricane Mountain together!
