Earthquakes

 Aunt Rebekah taught us about earthquakes.  In the Bible earthquakes are mentioned 16 times and in The Message 110 times.  Here is a quote from Brother Branham about earthquakes.

" Men's hearts are failing for fear, perplexed of time, distress between the nations. The earth's getting so nervous, till it's bursting forth earthquakes everywhere. Jesus said it would be that way. There'll be earthquakes in divers places. What's the matter? The earth knows she's doomed. She's nervous. The world's nervous. But the church is rising in the Gospel, tucked away with security. "He that cometh to Me, I'll in no wise cast out." Hallelujah!"

 First we peeled clementines and then tried to put it back together securing with toothpicks.  

The earth takes a different shape after an earthquake and has fault lines like

 the rips in the clementine skin.

 We used Oreo cookies to demonstrate different plate movements by sliding back and forth.

 

  

Aunt Rebekah used different size balls rolled under a US map to show the difference in Richer Scale ratings.  It was a great visual to demonstrate the larger the ball, the larger the number, thus the further across the map tremors could be felt.  For example: 3-marble, 4-golf ball, 6-baseball, 8-soccer ball.

Architects and engineers try to build structures that can withstand earthquakes.  So we tried to construct earthquake proof structures using toothpicks and marshmallows.

Then we tested our structures in a pan of jello.  Numbers were written on the paper representing the Richter Scale.  So we shook the pan slowing back and forth to begin with, and then faster and with more vigor as the earthquake grew stronger.

The chart on the wall behind Hope showed the types of plate boundaries (divergent, convergent, and transform) using dry lasagna noodles.
