We camped in New Hampshire and on Saturday we drove the auto road up Mount Washington, the tallest mountain on the east coast.  It was very cold and windy at the top, a chilly temperature of 26*F!!!


On the clearest days, observers can see as far as Mount Marcy in New York State, 134 miles to the west.

 The Tip Top House is the oldest surviving building on the summit of Mount Washington.

There is a post office in the Mount Washington Visitors Center at the summit!

 

 

Inside the Extreme Mount Washington Museum you could "drive" a snowcat down the auto road during winter.  It is the only way to get up or down the mountain when snow is covering the road.

 

We watched the Cog Railway make its first trip of the day up the mountain.

As we watched I noticed this man in the front of the car scraping the track off.

Rime ice covers everything at the top of the mountain.  Rime Ice is caused by low-hanging clouds which cause freezing fog.  The fog freezes to the wind facing side of tree branches, buildings, or any other solid objects.

 In 2004 Jonathon Wyatt set the record for running the auto road, he did it in 56 minutes!
Thomas Danielson set the 49 minute record for climbing the road on his bicycle.
And since it is an "auto road" the fastest automobile time is 6 minutes 11.41 seconds set in 2011!

 

Saturday we spent the night in Lake Placid, New York and Sunday morning we met up with a family from Indiana and climbed Hurricane Mountain together!
