Cape Henlopen 2014

Our family loves camping and bike riding so Cape Henlopen in Lewes, Delaware is the perfect place to go with friends!  We invited Mark and Kayla to go along with us and there also happened to be a very special visitor from Arizona here too :)  One morning we went to watch the sunrise on the beach...it was a little cloudy but we still got to see the colors come up through the clouds.

 We drove down on Sunday afternoon and headed straight for the water

We came back to the campground and set up camp before we had a bonfire

 Monday morning we were supposed to go deep sea fishing but because of the choppy water and stormy weather our boat trip was cancelled.  So instead we went for a ride around on the bike trails to the Nature Center and Fishing Pier.

We also climbed WWII observation tower #7 on Monday morning.

Fort Miles was built during WWII to defend the Delaware Bay. The growing use of long-range missiles brought an end to harbor defenses in the U.S. and by 1958, Fort Miles was no longer important to the defense of the region.  In 1964, over 500 acres of the base were returned to the State of Delaware, creating the heart of Cape Henlopen State Park.

At the nature center there is a touch tank where you can feel shells and horseshoe crabs...

 We also spotted some dolphins from the end of the pier...

 ...and someone kite surfing!

 We went back to the beach on Monday afternoon to play in the waves a bit more...we sure looked like the beach bum crew with our boogie boards, cooler, life-jackets, shovels, and chairs being carried on our bikes to the beach!

 We brought our lunch with us and had a picnic on the beach...fresh watermelon is always a treat.

Of course where there is food the seagulls are always attracted!

 We were planning to stay until Tuesday but the weather was calling for rain all Monday night and all day Tuesday.  We packed up on Monday evening just before it started raining and headed home.  But not before we completed our trip with a stop at Grandpoppy & Grandmommy's for dinner.
